Whether you’re single or loved-up, the annual day to celebrate / smugly gloat about / wallow in / indifferently shrug shoulders at (delete as appropriate) love is here, and it goes by the name of Valentine’s Day.

Like most things in life, we at Smiley prefer to look at the positive side, so whatever your relationship status, Valentine’s Day is a prime time to cosy up with some stories that will make your heart smile. That’s why we’ve scouted around for some of the best, real-life stories of how people met, all to make us melt on the inside like a decadently delicious Gü pudding (now on offer at Tesco, by the by).

As this weekend’s promise of Netflix and Chill brings in more streams of ‘Marley and Me’ than the amount of times Owen Wilson has said ‘Come on!’, get in the spirit early, tuck into an After Dark Melting Middle Pud and envelop yourself in the digital chapters of these stories that will make you go gü-ey eyed and weak at the knees.

(This post is in no way sponsored by Gü desserts, we just really like them.)

Good things come to those who wait

As Daisaku Ikeda says, ‘with love and patience anything is possible’ and this first story shows the beauty of biding one’s time.

“The first time we met was during second year of uni. I was going round to my friend’s house for dinner and feeling comfortable (ok, student-y) in my pyjamas I couldn’t be bothered to get dressed into clothes. She said it was ok as the only other person in was her housemate Tom and ‘he doesn’t matter.’ A year later, and some furtive conversations between, we had become closer eventually leading to a drunken smooch in the student union. …So drunken that neither of us actually remember it. But I do remember throwing up before and after! Fast forward another year of building anticipation, and our situation had become fraught with tension: a friend had forbidden us from seeing each other for fear of its effect on the group. This of course makes us want to see each other more and we start going out in secret for four months. We have our first kiss (that we can remember) at his house party when he said he wanted to show me a painting… And now, funnily enough, 6 years later whilst we are doing up our flat, we’re staying with friends in that same house with the painting!

Here’s to the wing men

Sometimes we need a mate to point us in the right direction…

“I was working at a bar and grille as a kitchen manager. One night a friend of mine brought some friends in to celebrate her birthday, some I knew, some I didn’t. They waited till I got off and I joined them. I met this one girl, the birthday girl was a mutual friend of ours. She was beautiful, smart, great sense of humor. We all lost track of time and before we knew it, it was nearly 11. Everyone was getting their things together when this girl said to me, “I’m going to run to the bathroom.” I said ok and she went off. A minute later the birthday girl came up to me and said, “she told us to leave her so she could come out all surprised that we left and you would give her a ride home.” I laughed and said “ok.” They left and a minute later, out she came, exclaiming “oh my god, did they leave?! I can’t believe it!” Of course I told her I would give her a ride home..

It’s been 5 years since that night and we are now happily married with a 6 month old little girl.”

Serendipity

What’s better than getting to a bus stop and the bus coming immediately? This story:

“Joe and I met at the number 35 bus stop in Clapham back in 2012. We were both en-route to dates; he was holding a bottle of wine, and I was holding a Domino’s pizza (the start of all good love stories). We got chatting on the bus as he asked for directions, and when he got off the bus I kicked myself for not having the guts to ask for his number. I didn’t think any more of it until 2 weeks later I was waiting for some friends outside a restaurant when he walked in. Thankfully he came back out and after checking I was ‘pizza girl’ we swapped numbers. Four years on and we’re living the dream together in beautiful Vancouver!”
